And with enough twists and turns to feel more like a political thriller than anything else, one could be forgiven if they forget that The Foreigner has been sold as being a straightforward revenge story while watching it. But The Foreigner is also much more of a two-hander than any of the trailers or synopses have let on, and the B-plot involving Hennessy working his way through all of his connections to try and secure his political position takes up a shockingly high amount of the film’s runtime. Quan’s mission is about as straightforward as it comes, and when Chan periodically mows through all of Hennessy’s guards and defenses, The Foreigner lives up to its dark tone and premise. And with his possible connections to the new IRA-orchestrated bombings stuck in secrecy, Quan begins an explosive crusade to scare and threaten Hennessy until he, as Quan believes he will, reveals the names of the Authentic IRA members responsible for the bombing. Play Quan’s mission eventually leads to him crossing paths with Brosnan’s Liam Hennessy, a politician with violent roots in the pre-Good Friday Agreement IRA, but who dedicated the latter half of his life to bettering the relations between Ireland and England, while also keeping his pockets full and political appeal high. Left without any other family members to comfort him, Quan makes it his mission to find those responsible for the bombing and bring them to justice. Among the casualties is the daughter of Quan Ngoc Minh (Chan), a Chinese restaurant owner with a history serving in the Vietnam-era special forces. Adapted from Stephen Leather’s 1992 novel The Chinaman, the film takes place in modern-day London and Belfast, where a new group of terrorists known as the “Authentic IRA” claim responsibility for a London bombing that kills over a dozen civilians and leaves many more injured. Brosnan, for his part, trades in his suave, Bond-like heroic swagger to play a corrupt politician who often closely resembles a mob boss, while Chan turns in a grim and quiet performance, directly contrary to the comedic roles most American audiences associate him with. Both actors are tasked with inhabiting roles that are antithetical to the on screen personas they’re most well-known for. It doesn’t hurt that director Martin Campbell has placed two capable acting veterans at the forefront of the film, in Pierce Brosnan and Jackie Chan.

My Dad was a Mercury dealer in the seventies, but the first boat I drove as a little kid had a 4.5 Evinrude. There is a reason I chose the G2 250 HO for the Activator project, it was the best 250 on the market. The right operator could make it work.Īlthough I am a Mercury guy through and through, I don’t generally have outward bias, and it truly bothers me for the industry to lose such a storied brand. There is so much value in that brand, I could see someone acquiring the Evinrude brand and G2 technology for pennies on the dollar. Is this the end of Evinrude forever? I actually don’t think so. Could it have been stripped down and streamlined into a premier niche product? Yes. Without the shutdown, more time would have allowed for an alternative strategy for the brand. Tracy Crocker failed to lead the right strategy and the Covid 19 shutdown forced the hand of the higher ups at BRP when the Evinrude brand had been fighting to be profitable for a while. But let’s not turn this into a marketing article. Halo products can create halo brands, and become market leaders by being aspirational and create new markets. Mercury has done this exceptionally well for a long time. By not having legit performance outboards and instead relying on “HO” branded engines that are merely decals, you give up marketing opportunities and premier product opportunities. BRP has considerable engine manufacturing capabilities but was the Evinrude strategy all wrong?Īlthough many people think that performance engines are niche and aren't worth making, those people simply fail to understand marketing and margin. I really liked what they were doing, I love competition and companies that think outside the box. Evinrude had a unique cowl that was interchangeable and customizable. Their two stroke technology was extremely efficient and in some ways out performed many four strokes. Evinrude G2 engines had the most innovative steering system on the market, a completely integrated unit. What was wrong at Evinrude? They had unique and very competitive engines, in fact when it comes to some features, they were leaders. Evinrude wasn’t run particularity well, but if Covid never happened, I have no doubt other avenues would’ve been explored before the plug was pulled. You can’t blame Covid 19 entirely and some companies that are now going bankrupt were in poor shape before Covid but you have to remember, this isn’t a bankruptcy, this is a business decision based on many factors. Tracy Crocker, president of Evinrude would head up the new BRP Marine Group. Ambition was high and set on growing boat brands along with innovative marine products. They recently launched their new 115 - 150 G2 line. BRP had acquired Alumacraft and Manitou Pontoon boats that had them create a new division, BRP Marine Group a couple years ago. BRP has experienced growth year over year for over the last 5 years and in 2019 reported annual revenue of over $5.2 billion.īefore Covid 19, there was every reason to believe Evinrude was executing on its long term plan. At the time it seemed like the perfect match. Bombardier had acquired Evinrude out of the OMC bankruptcy in 2001. This won’t be a news article though, I want to look at the brief history of Evinrude but I mostly want to look at what went wrong and why.īRP is a successful company, making a host of recreational products that spun off from Bombardier Inc. Mercury Marine will take over powering BRP brand boats. They have inventory and will deliver ordered engines as well. A representative from BRP told me they will honor the limited warranties, extended service contracts and supply customer service / parts for Evinrude outboards. The news coincides with BRP’s quarterly earnings report on May 28, 2020. It’s important to understand that BRP, which owns Evinrude, is fine, they are continuing with their recreational products and other segments of their marine business. And, the news that BRP is discontinuing production of Evinrude outboards came as a surprise to many. For one, Wave to Wave intentionally doesn’t do “news” articles for many reasons but sometimes the news is too big to ignore. This is a difficult article to write for many reasons. One notable group was the German-American Bund, a pro-Nazi paramilitary organization in the United States that was secretly funded and organized by the German government. Prior to Germany’s invasion of Poland, local Nazi affiliates had been present in areas outside the Reich, typically where there existed a sizable population of German descent. To a certain extent World War II repeated the pattern of World War I: great initial German military successes, the forging of a large-scale coalition against Germany, the loss of the war because of German overreaching and conduct. By its own nature it could not recognize any limits to its own volition, only limits set by opposed superior forces. Its dynamism was bound to expand and to spread. From the beginning, the Nazis did not intend to establish a new order of authoritarianism and inequality for Germany alone. When Germany started World War II, it came as the logical outcome of Hitler’s plans-known to Germans since the publication of Mein Kampf (1926)-and of his systematic preparations since 1933. It opened the road into the heart of central Europe to Joseph Stalin and was the immediate prelude to World War II, which began in Poland on September l. The agreement contained a secret treaty between Germany and Russia partitioning Poland and dividing the whole of eastern Europe into spheres of influence. On August 23, 1939, Hitler, without consulting his Italian and Japanese allies, concluded a pact of friendship and nonaggression with the Soviet Union. German invasion of Poland in World War IIīy 1939 the military preparations, including the militarization of German life and education and the establishment of a war economy, had made such progress in Hitler’s opinion that he could challenge the European order even at the risk of a second great war. Its vast and complex hierarchy was structured like a pyramid, with party-controlled mass organizations for youth, women, workers, and other groups at the bottom, party members and officials in the middle, and Hitler and his closest associates at the top wielding undisputed authority. Hitler crushed the Nazi Party’s left, or socialist-oriented, wing in 1934, executing Ernst Röhm and other rebellious SA leaders on what would become known as the “ Night of the Long Knives.” Thereafter, Hitler’s word was the supreme and undisputed command in the party. Nazi Party membership became mandatory for all higher civil servants and bureaucrats, and the gauleiters became powerful figures in the state governments. On the death of Hindenburg in 1934 Hitler took the titles of Führer (“Leader”), chancellor, and commander in chief of the army, and he remained leader of the Nazi Party as well. On July 14, 1933, Hitler’s government declared the Nazi Party to be the only political party in Germany. Only Red maintains a non-compressed raw option in addition to compressed redcode rd3. But everybody now uses raw compression ranging from 3:1 to 12:1. BMD came up with their internal solution BRAW which involved a partial debayer in-camera. Red and Sony eventually agreed to drop their lawsuits against each other but for the others including Canon, BMD, Arri were left to develop their own non-patent infringing raw solutions that for most involved external raw recorders. Well oops, it worked both ways because Sony counter-sued claiming Red violated a bunch of Sony patents. Red's Jim Jannard sued Sony for patent violation on internal raw recording, for monetary damages as well as the recall and destruction of all F5/F55/F65 cameras. Note: no need for log profiles in the camera - you can apply a log profile in post.Ĭlick to expand. What's going on is very old news. And, of course, with the expanded color space of RAW and all of the dynamic range of the sensor available you can also produce HDR videos. The rest is just playing with the look (get exposure and WB right). Color management: tell DaVinci it is a dng RAW file (with its expanded color gamut and linear gamma) and that you want it transformed and viewed in REC709. Much easier to work with than HEVC (H265) files and heavily-compressed H264 files. So, I took out the BMPCC recently to shoot true RAW to try to understand what the problem is that has led to proprietary processed flavors of "RAW" requiring bulky cameras or external recorders that are replacing true RAW. But now, DaVinci Resolve has evolved to be much more efficient and with better color management (and I know much more), plus computers are faster. It was difficult to get the colors right, and it was slow in post, but not impossible even on a laptop. I used it as my travel camera six years ago, shooting RAW in China, Florida and NYC. What is going on?Īs a consequence, the original BMPCC is one of the few affordable cameras left that shoot in true RAW. And, they removed the ability to shoot in true RAW when BRAW became available. The cameras are big and bulky (and ugly). Now they shoot in BRAW, but you need the large CFast cards to do that. The 4K and 6K successors also shot in true RAW. The original BMPCC was a tiny camera that shot true RAW, and as it was only HD, you could use sd cards, even fast I's. This means in principle the camera can be small and obviates the need for the added bulk of an external recorder. Recent cameras permit storing video via a usb-c port onto those small external and relatively cheap ssd's (Samsung T5, SanDisk Extreme). How big? Well, less than 1/2 hour of 4K 12bit true RAW takes up one terrabyte of space! You need something bigger and faster - CFAst or SSDs. You cannot shoot 4K 12bit true RAW on any sd card that is available (including II). So, what's the problem in shooting real RAW (RAW cng)? just big files and massive bitrates - a challenge for storage only. But they are not RAW, and they have artifacts and less latitude than true RAW. The advantages of these pseudo RAWs are that the files are smaller than true RAW cng and they are better than other codecs, even regular ProRes. And doing this processing with software can be much more effective (better) than baking this stuff in in the camera. The idea is that you the "author' can decide how much sharpening or noise reduction you want and you can color and shape the look (eg, contrast, saturation) too, taking advantage of 12 or 14 bits. All of the information (and noise) the sensor provides is captured. This not true for these video "RAWs".Īs far as I know, Cinema RAW or RAW cng is a true RAW, with no additional processing as above (no sharpening, noise reduction, compression). We have all shot RAW stills, and know that one great feature was that you could ignore white balance while shooting. The result is the clips have halos, smearing and compression artifacts, just like those codecs we are all used to using, and baked-in color. The above "RAW"s process the information from the sensor - this includes noise reduction and sharpening (edge enhancement) and also, if applied, compression.
